Movie Review: Old Fashioned

2/17/2015

Comments

On Valentine’s Day I had the pleasure of watching a great movie with my amazing wife.(1)

Against the backdrop of Fifty Shades of Grey (a film and book series that glorifies sadistic fornication), a movie by skoche films / Pure Flix was intentionally released the very same weekend.

The name of the film is Old Fashioned, and I highly commend it to all viewers seeking an actual love story portrayed in the medium of film.

My only regret about the movie is that it was only released in select theatres rather than in every theatre in which 50 Shades was darkening the culture. Of course I know God is sovereign and that even the tiniest light can scatter a great deal of darkness (Jn. 1:5; Eph. 5:8-14).
Old Fashioned
But as for the movie Old Fashioned itself: What was the story? What did it teach? What did it glorify? In essence, is it worth watching?

And now comes the hard part of trying to review a wonderful movie without giving any spoilers. But try I will!

The Proverbs 31 Woman...(My Wife)

Mary Calvert

My wife is a wonder to me.

An amazing, beautiful wonder.

While I regrettably don’t tell her how much I love and appreciate her nearly as much as I should (something I’m working on), I have to admit that as far as my experience is concerned – if there is a Proverbs 31 woman, it’s my wife.
To be fair, I’m sure there are many husbands out there who feel the same way about their wife (and praise God for that).

While the following will be a commentary on how thankful I am for my own wife and for all the things she’s done in the line of Proverbs 31, it’s also a sort of devotional commentary on the text of Proverbs 31 that I think others might benefit from as well  - so feel free to keep reading even for that aspect.

But in all honesty, the following is truly to let you know that whatever good you see in me, there is an amazing, wonderful wife whom God has provided to me as my helper in this world who is behind it all – to His glory.

When Men Fail

2/24/2014

Comments

Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity,
and in sin did my mother conceive me.
(Ps. 51:5)
Old Man with his Head in his Hands, Half-Figure
It is not, nor will it ever be (this side of glory), a question of whether a man will fail. It is, and always will be (this side of glory), a question of what it is in which he fails, how often he fails, to what degree he fails, and what he then does after he fails.

For just as King Solomon said, "Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins" (Eccles. 7:20), so too under the inspiration of the same Holy Spirit the Apostle Paul agreed in saying, "'None is righteous, no, not one'...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Rom. 3:10, 23).

Every man sins, and every man fails.(1)
The problem is compounded in that there are so many things in which men can and do fail. For a preliminary list, here are a few (just a few) things in which men can and do fail - all the time - but for which we have clear direction from God.
